Wow! It’s unbelievable but true. The Christmas holidays are upon us. For some of us this is a season of pure joy, a chance to connect with loved ones, with good food and celebration. For others, particularly moms, their reality may be much different. Shopping, countless obligations, and unrealistic demands inevitably results in more stress and frustration. This stress leads to health issues that surely can be avoided with a few health tips while shopping and attending parties.
A few thoughts about making healthier changes to your life….
As a wellness practitioner, I find that people are resistant to change because to them it means that they have to deprive themselves of something that is a guilty pleasure (pop, ice cream etc). The most effective solution to change is to add something healthy (ie a glass of water before drinking pop) . You’ll find that when adding something positive over a period of time, the guilty pleasures will drop off naturally. Deprivation never works. Keep this in mind when you read my helpful tips.
For those shoppers who want to brave the mall:
1. I always say “Fresh Fiber First!”. Add fresh fiber in the morning like an organic apple or pear to obtain your vitamins and minerals naturally.
2. Stay hydrated! Drink six to eight 8-ounce glasses of water a day. Coffee, soda pop, and alcohol are dehydrators (adding a glass of water before imbibing in your guilty pleasures creates a more effective approach to positive change) .
3. Stretch before and after a long day of shopping. When stressed, your muscles are less flexible and your chance of injury are greater.
4. Wear comfortable shoes with ample cushioning in the soles to absorb the impact of hard shopping mall floors.
5. If possible, plan trips to your car. Carry your purchases evenly weighted with both arms and don’t carry more than is absolutely necessary at one time. This will help to avoid muscle imbalances which lead to chronic spinal problems.
6. When taking a break eat light foods. A salad and some fruit are much better than a burger and fries. I’ve never heard any say “Wow, that salad really bloated me up!” In addition, domesticated beef (fed with corn and grains) has virtually no omega 3 fatty acids (the good fat) and french fries are processed carbs that have no nutritional value, period.
7. Coffee and sodas contain caffeine and sugar, which add more stress to the body. Again, add a glass of water prior to drinking your favorite beverage.
8. During the holiday season we typically run in overdrive, which can lead to stress and depression. Be grateful that you’re able to shop and have some fun!

Food for thought when going to holiday parties……
1. No meal skipping. People tend to overeat at a party if they’ve skipped meals prior. Eat a sound breakfast, light lunch then some sensible healthy snacks or salad before you attend the event.
2. Avoid the appetizers. Grab some nuts, veggies, and fruit which are high in nutrients and fiber. This will help you to avoid overeating the main dish.
3. Start with sparkling water first. This will satisfy your thirst and limit your alcohol intake. If you plan to drink, keep the holidays festive and designate a non drinking driver.
I’ve always said, if you take care of your bodies, it will definitely take care of you!
